Detailed Description
Notes from the artist: ‘The colours and forms I include in my collections are inspired by water, sky and local landscape. I use the grounding quality of clay to explore ideas of flow, balance and connection to nature. A low foot underneath the bowl means it appears to hover slightly from the surface and I love playing with this idea of balance in my work.
Each bowl is handmade by me, in my garden studio in East Oxford and is inspired by Nerikomi – a traditional Japanese technique of layering coloured clay and slicing through to reveal patterns. The bowl is glazed on the inside and unglazed and polised on the outside, creating a smooth matte surface.
Each piece is made carefully by hand which means that they are all unique. By their nature they may reveal small differences which are all part of their handmade character.’

About The Artist
Emily Marston Ceramics
Playing with colour and pattern, using simple shapes and clean lines, Emily creates one-off ceramic jewellery and vessels. She makes each work by hand using slab building and carving techniques. Hand-coloured clay is inlaid into white porcelain or stoneware to create patterns embedded within the piece, meaning that no two are the same.
