Liberty’s in the West End opened in 1875. The founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, dreamed of docking a ship in the city streets to sell exotic wares found on his travels. As Liberty’s put it today, he created a store of ‘six floors of cutting-edge design, unexpected edits and beautiful wares from the world’s greatest craftspeople.’ The following quote from Arthur Liberty sums up his passion and aim: ‘I was determined not to follow existing fashions but to create new ones.’
