ABSENCE is a unique, original wall hanging by artist, Line Nilsen. The warp is hand-painted with ink before weaving. Line Nilsen was born in Norway, and ABSENCE is a response to the land and light in the north of the country during dark winter months.

Detailed Description
ABSENCE is an artwork inspired by Line Nisen’s birthplace, Norway.
‘In arctic Norway, the extreme absence and presence of light throughout the seasons have an influence on mind and body,’ she says. ‘I want the work to evoke emotion, so the viewer feels the gravity of the arctic winter. In turn, this demonstrates how a season without any sunlight can feel both dark and light at the same time.’
Line makes her work on a mechanical floor loom in her Nottingham studio. She paints each piece by hand with ink before weaving. Once the warp is dry, she can set up the loom, one yarn at a time. She then weaves the 1,120 strands of yarn in to light delicate cloth using a fine lurex weft. Finally, Line mounts the weave to a stained wood header, allowing the fabric to hang elegantly in any space. This is a hand-crafted product, making each piece unique, so variations occur in the painting and weaving process.
