“The act of making cloth connects me to a long line of weavers whose tradition is vanishing in a world of mass production. It is the space where storytelling, making and memory meet.” Majeda Clarke.
Born in the 19th Century, Adela Breton travelled across Mexico recording the architecture and culture of Mayan ruins. She created vivid paintings that recorded the astonishing artefacts she found. She challenged colonial perceptions of Mayan culture and captured a time that would otherwise be lost forever. Hernandez is the nickname affectionately given to her by the Mexicans.
This collection is inspired by extraordinary female explorers and their sketchbooks. This collection evokes an artist’s palette much like the watercolours used by these women on their expeditions. The harsh environments limited what they could carry on their journeys reducing the variability of colour, which is demonstrated in the tonal hues of the design. These are double cloth blankets with a distinctly different pattern on the other side, produced in small batches in a Lancashire mill.
The Hernandez blanket is woven in a beautiful valley on the Lancashire/ Yorkshire border in England, in one of the few working mills dating back to the 1700s. This collection is woven with 100% geelong lambswool, spun locally. Utilizing double cloth regional weaving knowledge with a contemporary twist each soft lambswool blanket is a cherished heirloom. Each design is blanket stitched with yarn surplus from the weaving process.
Care instructions: Dry Clean Only.
